These days money is tight, the cost of airfare is up, and airport security is a hassle. This year you’ve decided to stay in town for a Winter Break “Staycation” here in Cleveland. So, before cabin fever sets in, make some plans to go out and have some fun. Here are some great ideas that are sure to be a hit with the kids:
See a winning team play at Quicken Loans Arena. No, unfortunately we’re not talking about the Cavs, but the good old Harlem Globetrotters will be in town for two shows on December 27th. We went last year and it was worth every penny for the tickets, and odds are good that they’ll win. The show is tons of fun for all ages.
Go to the movies – and go big! Try the Omnimax Theater at the Great Lakes Science Center. Playing right now: Santa vs. the Snowman, Everest, Under the Sea, and Dolphins.
Check out what some say is Cleveland’s best holiday display at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. There are animal topiaries, whimsical gingerbread houses, a two story tree house and so much more. In addition to the annual WinterShow, be sure to visit the rest of the indoor gardens where you can escape to The Spiny Desert of Madagascar or marvel at the butterflies at The Lush Rainforest of Costa Rica. It’s more than plants – in addition to the butterflies there are an assortment of birds, reptiles and amphibians enjoying the year round warmth of these exhibits.
It’s likely we’ve mentioned it before in previous articles, but we just love Firefly’s Mini Golf in South Park Center in Strongsville. How can you go wrong with glow-in-the-dark indoor mini golf? It is 18 holes of fun –putt your way through a rainforest, the arctic, and space while listening to upbeat popular music. Great for ALL ages.
Go ahead, bundle up and play in the snow.
So far, Mother Nature has provided us with lots of snow to work with. Instead of fighting it – go outside and enjoy it. Snow angels, snow forts, snowball fights – it’s all good. Also, we LOVE the guide to building a better snowman in this month’s Cleveland Magazine. Check it out for yourself to learn how to build the best snowman ever!
Like the snow idea, but want to think bigger. Try Snow Days at Progressive Field where the home of the Cleveland Indians has been turned into a winter wonderland with a 19,000 square foot skating track and a tubing hill built into the bleacher seats. There is a fire pit and concessions to warm you and give you a snack break. Don’t worry if the snow stops, they are fully prepared with ample snowmakers. Open through January 2nd.
Enjoy tubing, skiing, and snowboarding right in our own backyard. Boston Mills and Brandywine are open for business and have lots to do to keep families happy and busy this time of year. We love the Polar Blast Snow Tubing Park at Brandywine.
If you have some other ideas that you think others would enjoy hearing about, please share by using the comments section below.
We hope you enjoy your Cleveland Staycation. We have also decided to stick around for the holidays, so if you run into us at one of these fun destinations, be sure to say hello.
